Spaven X Sandunes – Spaven X Sandunes – album review

Spaven X Sandunes – Spaven X Sandunes

Out Now

Spaven x Sandunes is a collaboration of musical worlds. ‘Where one of the most respected producers on the burgeoning Mumbai electronic scene, Sandunes, meets London-based drummer Richard Spaven, renowned for his distinctive jazz-influenced improvisational percussion work.’ Fighting Boredom have been listening, read what we thought below.

This is what it sounds like when an excellent jazz drummer who knows how to make a lot of noise quietly meets up with the woman currently setting the Indian electronic music scene alight. The music they make together is a flowing exercise in sound. The percussion is a revelation whether it’s gentle and sounds brushed or providing a military marching beat with all styles in between. The electronica sounds mellow, blissed out and as if it’s been gently laid over sun bleached bones of the drums in ribbons of colour and finery. Together they flesh out the sound into a whole and what a whole it is. It’s a sensual bright and open thrill for the senses.

Everything is stated perfectly, there’s no mad solos or self indulgent sections, just a long winding pathway from the start of the record until the end. A jazz record for losing yourself in, letting your brain melt into the noises and spiral up and away.
