Pissed Jeans – Strip Search Tramp – Chatte Royale – Squid Pisser – album reviews

Here we have the pissed off street punk of Pissed Jeans, the Sci-Fi punk’n’roll of Strip Search Tramp. The mathy post-rock of Chatte Royale and the Extreme metal/grindcore of Squid Pisser. Have a read and listen below..

Pissed Jeans – Half Divorced

Sub Pop

This a big pissed off slab of US street punk with a touch of surf twang and a big dollop of Oi! heaped on top. It’s hard core, fast everything, rough shouty vocals and a rough as old boots feel too. It’s the shouty harmonies that give it the camaraderie of Oi! And it reminds me of that bunch of bands. It’s not pretty, it revels in its nastiness in places. You will wish you were watching them live, covered in sweat and punching as you throw yourself around but as it’s just a record, don’t break anything when you play it. When they go slowly it’s just as hard and just as shouty. When they go fast it’s brilliant. A great punk album.

Strip search tramp – B-Movie Disasters

Fighting Boredom disclaimer. This lot are my mates and the drummer’s pretty handy so I won’t be slagging it off. It’s a manic mash up of B-Movie, serial killer and other general weirdo themes, it’s a squidging together of rockabilly cool, punk attitude and a sleazy mind. It’s a brilliant blue mullet, a Crass vs Wu Tang Clan shirt, it’s the Damned’s old drumkit and a bunch of painfully cool samples dropped in at highly opportune places. There’s odes to Faster Pussycat Kill Kill and Ennio Morricone. Songs about Jeffry Dahmer and the end of the earth in an ecological apocalypse. Swamp driven drawled rock’n’roll, the Joe 90 theme tune, nasty punk and quiet strumming. This is the business people, get one now.

Chatte royale – Mick Torres Plays Too Fucking Loud

Kapitän Platte

I don’t know who Mick Torres is and what he plays loudly, but Chatte Royal have been added to the growing list of bands that have released albums over the last couple of years that feature predominantly guitar based instrumental rock. This time it’s a very much anarchic affair in that they appear to have thrown any rule book out of the window. Classical guitar melds into gargantuan riffage then back to classical. Fast rock’n’roll drums have quiet jazzy sounds dropped onto them and thunderous heaviness stretches out into soft strumming. To fully understand it you will need to listen but I think I summed it up pretty well. A good album.

Squid Pisser – Vaporise a tadpole/neighbourhood

SKiN GRAFT Records

Now this lunatic noise is bloody marvellous. It’s stupidly aggressive, incomprehensive and ridiculously layered, the vocals range from screaming, shrieking and growling depending on which guest singer is involved with each track. The best track, and I am being totally biased in this, is the one with Yuko from Melt Banana on. She is in her absolute element adding to the intimidatingly nasty electronics. But the other songs don’t slouch, it’s like having a fist fight with a pair of headphones on and wading in mushy peas. It’s violent and stupidly brilliant. Just bloody listen.
