Bangalore Progressive Rockers Coma Rossi formed in 2014 and have ‘as a band, has evolved in its sound and has finally found its own voice in this album’ the ‘lyrics explore the feelings of loss, grief, and effect of time on relationships, but with a very strong undertone of hope.’

Fighting Boredom have been listening, read what we thought below

Coma Rossi are a progressive rock band from Bangalore in India. Now I know what you’re thinking, Prog? What’s going on? Well, we here at Fighting Boredom don’t fear the Prog. We know our Tangerine Dream from our Godsticks. It’s all music, and it doesn’t need to make sense to anyone else. This album has eight tracks and lasts for longer than an hour, It’s proper ‘play the songs until they have a life of their own’ prog. The shortest is just over six minutes long. But man, the tracks don’t wear out, they fly.

It’s gentle music for the most part, interludes of static, underlying beeps and samples of speech make you concentrate before you lose yourself in the long, flowing sound. But that really lulls you into a false sense of security, because this lot can unleash Prog bombastic daftness at any time, you’re melting into a quiet puddle into the sofa and they blast you into spilling your tea as they ramp up the sound before dissipating into guitar widdling solos and smooth drums.

The best song is ‘Turn back Time’ at just shy of seven minutes. It very subtly echoes the sound of where Coma Rossi are from with the percussion. It grows, emotions flowing freely until it erupts into mad riffage and almost screaming. It’s the moment when the vocal slips from smooth and cool into emotionally broken that this band make the most sense to me.

So don’t fear the Prog. Open up your ears and mind to this trip from India. Coma Rossi have triumphed and made a Bombastic, smooth progressive rock album for right now.

Coma Rossi have a Bandcamp page and are on Facebook
