Self Surgery is the first album by Mrs Piss, ‘a new collaboration between Chelsea Wolfe and Jess Gowrie. Drawing on their collective rock, metal, and industrial influences, the project began while the two were touring around together during Wolfe’s Hiss Spun album in 2017. These songs feel more urgent and visceral than anything either of them has created before: heaviness spurred on by punk spirit.‘
This sound is nasty. It’s a nasty mixture of desperation, howling, hardcore massive guitars and dumb punk. It’s not a stupid record, it’s painful and harsh, Chelsea Wolfe and Jess Gowrie channel the soullessness of loss and chaotic ruin throughout and as the music changes the emotional discharge of bleak hate and loss never wavers.
Built to pummel an audience of devoted maniacs I would love to see this performed live, not sure my brain and heart could take it but what a sight that would be. Right from the name of the collaboration and the cheap splattered cover art you hope that this sound be as nasty as it looks and I can assure you that it does.
A punch to the throat of punk attitude and desperation. It’ll ruin your mood but you’ll love it
