Singles Reviews in the Pub – March 20205

It’s that time again where the snapper and scribbler head to our favourite brewery and swig beer while reviewing the various flotsam and jetson washed up in our emails, ears and purchased this month, we have different tastes and this usually leads to hilarity, anger and just dumbfounded disbelief. We were expecting special guests this week but they didn’t materialise so it’s just us. Have a read and listen to what we thought below and then tell us what we got wrong, we always like an argument.

Bunuel – Drug Burn

This is a brutal bad trip, loose as fuck and powerful as a swift punch to the face. The Photographer says I like that except for one thing and that’s the terrible horrible tone that’s in it, there’s no need for it, could have been carried by guitars but it has made it almost unlistenable.

Jetstream Pony – Bubblegum Nothingness

A slice of brilliant, lovely, shiny indie done properly with our Beth singing. The Photographer says I quite like it. Indie pop at its best, hints of Wedding Present and all sorts, it’s great indie pop.

Flava D – Do U Want Me

I like Flava D and this is another excellently wobbly great drum and bass track. The Photographer says that it takes a couple of seconds to get going and it’s got that new school drum and bass. With quite a lot of kitchen sink in there too, old school stuff. I like it, could live without the vocal but it doesn’t harm it.

Messer Chups – Kiss of the Night

Groovy Cool Surf twangs and rock’n’roll drums, a brilliant track and they look ace too. The Photographer says that this is great surf music, thank you very much, I’ll have some of that, and it’s so laid back it’s almost horizontal.

Dead Pioneers – Po$t American
Native American punk, anger and hate fuelled, another excellent track from them. The Photographer says we’ve reviewed these before and this is just as good. Aggressive vocals telling it like it is.

Sextile – S is For
European electronic dance music trying to be edgy, it’s okay but I wouldn’t dance to it. The Photographer agrees, European dance music and is neither edgy or good.

The Raveonettes – Blackest
I really love this band, dark goth beats and guitar then sweet pop vocal, great loud quiet loud  song. The Photographer says I quite like it but it’s a little bit warm and fuzzy everywhere, it’s lost a bit of spikiness, could be better.

CocoRosie – Pushing Daisies

This one is a weird hybrid of hip hop beats and childish vocoder vocals. The laid back groove makes it okay pop. The Photographer says I didn’t know what to make of it, the vocoder vocals put me off straight away.

Within Destruction – Incomplete

An Anime obsessed metal band, very poppy for the kids who will love it. Sounds far too pretty to start with and unconvincingly nasty in the very heavy bits. The Photographer says it’s not made for me. It’s made for people thirty forty years younger than me, dreary, formulaic and not very good.

Maria Iskariot – Leugenaar

This one has a great garage groove and a totally over the top female vocal, a good song. The Photographer says it’s quite interesting and I have no idea what she’s going on about obvs, but it’s quite rocky with interesting vocals.

Ariel Maniki and the Black Haloes – Pieces

I thought it was Ariel Mankini! Electronic gothy groove, darkwave, decent but the vocals let it down. The Photographer says that it’s a bit wet. It’s very goth darkwave and there’s better around.

L.A. Witch – The Lines

An ace fuzzy garage pop rock groove with ace female vocals, another great song. The Photographer says I quite liked this. Thunderous drums and early eighties alternative spiky guitars.

The Jesus Lizard – I’m Tired of Being Your Mother

Another excellent song, nasty and scathing. But the Photographer says that it sounds like it didn’t make the album, which is really annoying because it’s basically an offcut so not good enough, but it is the Jesus Lizard so it’s worth a listen.

Dawn Brothers – Can’t Let You In, Can’t Let You Out

Country rock, it’s okay for what it is. The Photographer says that luckily it’s not Coldplay but it’s not far off. You could take your mum to the gig, she’ll love it, it’s not the trade we’re in.

Sandwell District – Dreaming

Nice fuzzy beats, skittering weirdness behind, I like this. The Photographer says this is great , this is probably single of week, repetitive and I can hear Regis in the background, it’s great and it builds and builds and stops and then goes again.

JakoJako – Kumquat

A weirdly bright electronic meandering track, I really like this. The Photographer agrees that it does meander a lot but in an interesting way, it never loses its way.

Glare – Nu Burn
This has massive guitars and shoegaze vocal, great stuff. The Photographer says that iif you like Slowdive and company you’ll like this. It’s not the worst thing I’ve heard of this ilk, it is tricky to make this stuff sound different.

Amammoth – Among Us

A wonderful down key doom song, it is nine minutes long so has lots of space to breathe, it takes four minutes for a growling voice to start, which only proves thst it should have been an instrumental. The Photographer says this is not too long, it could go on for another ten minutes as far as i’m concerned. It’s sludgy psychedelic stoner rock and I love it,I could live without the vocal but it’s just great.

Whiney – Stop & Search

A brilliant Drum and Bass groove and gruff toasting, I really like it, and at one point he refers to the police as hearing the ‘nee naw’. Brilliant. The Photographer says more new school kitchen sink drum and bass, great vocals and seriously disturbing sub bass on it too. Another track that’s close to being the record of the week.

Iron Lung – Purgatory Dust

Iron Lung – Purgatory Dust

This sounds like a fist fight. It’s Ace. The Photographer says yes.

Mclusky – people person

This is a great nasty post hardcore punk track. The Photographer says it’s slightly grungy and shouty, reminds me of the Butthole Surfers as its got that distorted disconnected feel with it. Along with a great backline, it ain’t record of the week.

Dukes of Mumbai – U33
This is an ace cover of the Heads. The Photographer says it’s a great heavy instrumental version of the track, it’s great and needs a release!

At this point, as usual Fighting Boredom are quite tipsy and celebrating another job well done. We sit and listen to the solo guitar player who also is the nicest man in Rock’Roll on the planet, that’s his official title and relax. He did approach us earlier with a look of absolute dread to ask if we were reviewing him.. we weren’t.,

Single of the week is the brilliant Sandwell District.
